The game will launch ahead of the first-person shooter reboot of the XCOM series, which was delayed to release in early 2013. Users will be able to combine human units with alien soldiers - customising their selections with special abilities - or opt to invest more points in extra soldiers as a means of overwhelming the opposition. The game's multiplayer mode features a timer, aimed at increasing the tension and ensuring that the better tactician wins the round.
In addition to the story campaign, there will be an online multiplayer mode that was likened to "speed chess" at the gamescom expo in Germany. Players will command a global anti-alien defence force, where threats from outer space must be identified and the population at large kept safe.
